What Wi-Fi 7 brings with 320 MHz, MLO and 4096-QAM; an access point and PoE sizing example for a 2,400 m² office.
Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) is the newest generation of the wireless standard and as of 2026 has begun replacing Wi-Fi 6/6E in corporate projects. Rather than telling the customer "a new model is out", explaining in which situations the investment pays back builds trust for the reseller.
What does Wi-Fi 7 bring?
- 320 MHz channel width: twice the 160 MHz channel of Wi-Fi 6 in the 6 GHz band.
- Multi-link operation (MLO): a device can use the 5 and 6 GHz bands at the same time, reducing latency and dropouts.
- 4096-QAM: about 20 percent more data in the same signal.
- Low latency: a steadier connection for video meetings, cloud desktops and real-time applications.
When to recommend it
- In new installations: the infrastructure will be used for 5 - 7 years, so choosing Wi-Fi 7 at the start makes sense.
- In high-density environments: meeting rooms, schools, hotels, trade fairs and contact centres.
- In refreshes of old infrastructure: installations over five years old using Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac).
Because the device side is not complete yet, most of the customer's working devices may still be Wi-Fi 6; even then a next-generation access point is backward compatible and gives a capacity advantage.
Sizing example
Consider a 2,400 m² office with 180 employees. For coverage, allowing one access point per 200 m² on average gives 12 units. For capacity, with two devices per employee (360 devices) and a target of 40 concurrent clients per access point, 9 are enough. The larger of the two, 12 access points, is chosen.
Switch and cabling
- The access point uplink should be 2.5GbE; a 1GbE port creates a bottleneck.
- 12 access points at about 30 W each need a PoE budget of 360 W. A 48-port switch with a 740 W PoE budget covers this comfortably.
- Category 6A or better cabling is recommended.
Quoting tips
Always include a site survey and the wireless management software in the quote. Products with a long warranty (five years or lifetime) show the customer the total cost of ownership better. Bayit offers Wi-Fi 7 certification training free in its weekly webinars.
Frequently asked questions
Are the existing switches enough? Mostly not: 1GbE uplinks and a low PoE budget restrict Wi-Fi 7 speed. Can the 6 GHz band be used in Türkiye? Conditions of use may change with regulation; check the current rules when quoting and select the device's country setting correctly.
